1. Introduction

The environment and natural resources are being impacted by enormous burdens, thus considerably impairing the quality of life for current and future generations. In light of the magnitude and range across national borders, environment problems require a coordinated approach at the greater European and/or global level.

2. What kind of programme is usually funded?

In the domain of environment, the following four central research fields are being tracked, to which belong, respectively, sub-activities with special work areas belong:

  1. Climate change, environmental pollution and risks
  2. Sustainable resource management
  3. Environment technology
  4. Observation of the earth and instruments for the assessment of sustainable development
  1. Climate change, environmental pollutions and risks
    • Burdens for environment and climate, e.g. the functionality of climate and abrupt changes; natural and anthropogenic emissions; carbon cycle and greenhouse gases, future climate; natural climate change and socio-economic repercussions; strategies for responses with adjustment, avoidance policy guidance
    • Environment and health; e.g. repercussions to health as a result of environmental stress; integrated approaches for risk-evaluation for environment and health; development of methods and decision-making aids for risk analysis and policy development
    • Natural dangers, e.g. risk management, activation factors and prediction; vulnerability evaluation and social repercussions, risk evaluation and management; multiple risk evaluation and strategies for avoidance
  2. Sustainable resource management
    • Protection and sustainable management of natural and anthropogenic resources and bio-diversity, e.g. integrated resource management; water resources; soil research and desertification; bio-diversity, municipal development; integrated forest research
    • Management of marine-life habitats, e.g. marine resources
  3. Environmental technologies
    • Environmental technologies for sustainable management and preservation of the natural and man-made environment, e.g. water, soil, waste; purification technologies; designed environment; marine environment
    • Protection, preservation and restoration of the cultural heritage, including human living spaces, e.g. evaluation and conservation of the cultural heritage; environment technologies for archaeology and landscapes; integration of cultural heritage in municipal and rural surroundings.
    • Technology evaluation and technology testing, e.g. risk evaluation for chemicals and alternative test procedures
  4. Observation of the earth and instruments for the evaluation of sustainable development
    • Systems for earth and ocean observation and methods of monitoring for environmental and sustainable development, e.g. integration of European activities in GEO; cross-sectional research within GEO; observation of the earth in newly industrialised countries and developing countries
    • Prognosis methods and instruments for the recording of sustainability, e.g. tools for evaluation of repercussions; indicators for sustainable development; und interplays between social, economic and ecological systems

3. What kind of participant is usually funded? - Participation rules

Eligible legal entities

  • Universities and universities of applied sciences (formerly known as technical colleges or "Fachhochschulen")
  • Non-university research institutions
  • Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
  • Enterprises with aspirations for innovation (from industry, commerce, etc)
  • Public facilities such as officials
  • Consultation facilities, etc.

Eligible nations

  • EU-27
  • Associated countries (Iceland, Israel, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey)
  • International Cooperation Partner Countries (ICPC-countries)
  • Third countries (USA, Canada etc.) => as a rule, they receive no funding!

Make-up of the consortium

  • Minimum three independent legal entities from three different EU member states (third nations do not count as minimum partners)
  • Possible exceptions and special cases are specified in the respective work programmes

4. What is the procedure for funding? – Financing models

The aggregate research activities should be tracked with an integrated approach, for which the European Union makes available , between 2007 and 2013, a total of approximately 1.9 M. €

Depending on the type of project, participants and activity, the following quotas are given (not valid for SME-specific projects!):

Research & Technological development:

75% for research institutions and SMEs
50% for all other legal entities

Demonstration activities:

50% for all legal entities

Coordination, audit costs and other activities:

100% for all legal entities

Coordination/ Support Actions:

100% for all legal entities

Costs eligible for funding:

Personnel, travel, material, infrastructure, other costs, external services, common costs
