Goal of the four-year project is to develop a fully automated, AI-supported platform for the production of cell- and tissue-based bioimplants for patients with bone defects in the jaw and face region.
The project “Fully automated cell and tissue-engineered bioimplant production for orocraniofacial regeneration (BioFACTORy)” began on September 1, 2026, and is coordinated by the University of Bergen. A total of 14 partners from nine European countries are participating. With a budget of more than 8.1 million euros, BioFACTORy is funded under Horizon Europe.
THWS contributes its expertise in the areas of data infrastructure, medical technology, and laboratory automation. Together with the project partners, the group collects and annotates biological image and sensor data, which serves as the basis for training the AI models. In doing so, THWS works closely with the Silesian University of Technology, which is also involved in data annotation.
The Bavaria-Poland Cooperation Office in MedTech was involved in establishing connections between TWHS in Bavaria and the Silesian University of Technology during early collaboration stages, thereby supporting the initiation of this partnership.
