Relevant EU funding programmes for SMEs

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that want to remain competitive must invest in research and development (R&D) and bring the results onto the market as products or services.

The European Union funds R&D activities on the basis of framework programmes and calls for proposals. One of the Commission’s central objectives is to further increase the participation of SMEs in European research projects and to make access to funding programmes easier. Therefore, the participation of SMEs in an EU project must be at least 30% in various research areas. Broad-based and application-oriented programmes in particular offer innovative SMEs a good opportunity to conduct research together at international level.
