EU project MINOA: Conference on “Trends in Mathematical Modelling, Simulation and Optimisation: Theory and Applications”

02/03/2021
EU project MINOA

From 2 – 3 March 2021, the conference "Trends in Mathematical Modelling, Simulation and Optimisation: Theory and Applications" will bring together leading experts from applied mathematics, computer science, and engineering. The conference is organised by the European Marie-Skłodowska-Curie ITN project MINOA ("Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Optimization: Algorithms and Applications"), the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) TRR 154-2 and the ADA Lovelace Center by Fraunhofer IIS.

The goal of the conference is to stimulate discussions between researchers and industrial representatives who are interested in today's challenges in energy, logistics and engineering. A focus will be on network problems. The conference aims to offer a platform for discussions between the various disciplines.

The event will feature presentations by a number of high-profile speakers  from academia and industry from the US and from Europe.

Further information on the conference can be found here.

About MINOA

Whether in logistics or in energy management – extremely short-term decisions are seldomly made by humans today. Highly intelligent machines that can control processes and systems in real time take care of this instead. The underlying software determines the best possible results in fractions of seconds by using complex mathematical calculations. Finding out how to achieve this is the task of mathematical optimisation. While tremendous progress has been made for optimising simplified situations, limited problem classes or at a theoretical level, practically efficient implementation and successful application of new mathematical findings to complex real-life problems is still in its infancy.

The MINOA (Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Optimisation: Algorithms and Applications) Network seeks to develop new and effective algorithms which can be integrated into numerous applications from the energy, logistics, engineering, natural sciences and data analytics sectors. As an ITN (Innovative Training Network), it also trains the next generation of highly skilled researchers and managers in applied mathematics, operations research and computer science.

BayFOR intensively supported the project during the application process and is now involved in MINOA as an associated partner for trainings and communication activities.

About TRR 154

Within the framework of TRR 154, researchers in Erlangen-Nuremberg, Darmstadt and Berlin are working on the certification of novel answers to major challenges in mathematical modelling, simulation and optimisation using the example of gas networks. To achieve this goal, new paradigms are being established and brought to bear in the integration of these disciplines and, in particular, in the interplay between integer and nonlinear programming in the context of stochastic data are established and brought to bear.
