Regional Innovation Support: Webinar sessions on the international call for proposals for the EU project SYSTEMEU

As a partner in the European project SYSTEMEU, BayFOR is driving forward networking between Bavarian innovation drivers and international partners in four other European regions: Norte (PT), Castilla y León (ES), Tuzla Canton (BA) and North-West (RO). Together with the SYSTEMEU partners, it is organising information sessions from March to July 2026 on the Cascade Call “Financial Support to Third Parties” (FSTP) – a call for interregional collaborative projects in the field of digitalisation within the health, mobility and energy sectors. The call is scheduled to be published in early June.

What are Cascade Calls?

Cascade Calls are calls for proposals in which ongoing Horizon Europe projects allocate part of their EU budget to external organisations. This mechanism is officially referred to in the EU programme as Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP).

Project consortia publish their own open calls for this purpose, through which interested organisations can apply with project ideas. Successful applicants receive funding to, for example:

  • test pilot applications
  • demonstrate innovative technologies
  • carry out experiments or validations
  • develop new applications within existing research and innovation projects

Further information can be found in our news article “Cascade Calls in Horizon Europe: Finding funding opportunities through EU projects”.

Who might be interested in the Cascade Call?

The online sessions are aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and research institutions from the participating regions. The aim is to strengthen the participation of Bavarian stakeholders in one of Europe’s leading innovation networks and to support the establishment of interregional consortia.

The focus is on:

Consortium formation: strategies for building cross-border partnerships
• Growth & Funding: Details of the SYSTEMEU funding call
• Bavarian Ecosystem: Integrating regional strengths into the European context

As part of the SYSTEMEU project, up to six interregional projects will be selected to form a portfolio of innovative initiatives. The aim is to strengthen cooperation between the regions, promote the exchange of knowledge and resources, and develop scalable and effective solutions with measurable outcomes.

A budget of €7.7 million has been allocated for this purpose, representing 51.8% of the action plan’s total budget. These funds are intended to support the selected consortia in the development, testing and validation of innovative digital solutions in the target sectors.

BayFOR supports participants in understanding the structures of international calls for proposals and utilising them effectively for their innovation projects.
