Welcome to our next edition of the Bavaria-Africa Bulletin.

At the Scientific Coordination Office Bavaria-Africa, which is part of the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR), our mission is to foster and deepen collaboration between stakeholders in Bavaria and Africa within research and innovation. We are dedicated to offering comprehensive support for identifying suitable funding sources and preparing project proposals for European or national funding programs that encourage the involvement of both African and Bavarian project partners.

The first quarter of 2024 offers a wide range of funding opportunities across various areas of science and innovation. This edition has the HM KNUST Low Vision project in the spotlight. So stay curious and enjoy reading!

Funding Opportunities

WKS Bavaria-Africa Early-Career Scholarship

The scholarship aims to enhance collaboration between Bavaria and African countries, addressing the funding gap for early-career researchers in PhD programs or post-doc positions. Open to individuals of any nationality and discipline working at a Bavarian institution, the program funds research stays of up to one month in collaboration with African institutions, focusing on networking activities alongside research components.

Transdisciplinary Approaches to Mobility and Global Health

With this joint call, the Novo Nordisk Foundation (DK), Wellcome (UK) and the Volkswagen Foundation (DE) are funding multi-perspective research into the interactions between mobility and health.
The funding encourages innovative methods and approaches that address the sustainable effects of mobility and promotes research collaboration across disciplines and geographical boundaries, involving non-academic stakeholders.

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) calls upon researchers from all African countries and Germany to participate in a scientific exchange focused on neurosciences, encompassing basic, applied, and clinical topics. ERA Fellowship - Green Hydrogen

The DAAD's "ERA Fellowships – Green Hydrogen" scholarship program invites Master's, Ph.D. students, and PostDocs in diverse scientific disciplines with a focus on "green hydrogen" to apply. Eligible candidates include individuals from all EU member states and select African countries, namely Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Togo, and Tunisia.

Global Health EDCTP3 has announced seven open calls for research proposals, ranging in funding from 3.5 - 15 million EUR. The 2024 work programme expands the range of addressed topics, emphasising the development of interventions, including pharmaceuticals, vector control, and digital health tools, with a strong emphasis on supporting African scientists through training and gender-balanced selection.

This call is a Coordination and Support Actions and aims to bolster the AU-EU Innovation Agenda by uniting a diverse array of stakeholders from both regions. HORIZON-CL5-2024-D2-01-02

This Research and Innovation Action aims to define principles for high-integrity climate commitments, develop detailed low-emission pathways, and create tools to evaluate and monitor NDCs, fostering a more integrative approach across various policy objectives. Current Nationally Determined Contributions and climate policies fall short of Paris Agreement goals, requiring strengthened efforts to align with global objectives and Sustainable Development Goals.

Non-Li Sustainable Batteries with European Supply Chains for Stationary Storage (Batt4EU Partnership)

The goal of this innovation action is to enhance economic resilience and competitiveness while addressing green and digital transitions and reducing strategic dependencies on critical raw materials. Projects are expected to develop post-lithium cell chemistries with specified cost, safety, energy density, and power metrics for selected stationary energy storage markets.

The Impact of the European Green Deal on African Businesses

The European Green Deal has a multifaceted impact on African businesses. With a focus on making the EU climate-neutral by 2050, opportunities arise for African companies in renewable energy partnerships. However, challenges like deforestation regulations affecting key exports and the need for robust supply chains are evident. Support structures, including the Global Gateway Africa-Europe Investment Package, offer funding for African countries transitioning to climate-friendly practices, presenting collaboration opportunities through programs like the European Regional Development Fund and Horizon Europe.

Building Bridges: Ethiopian Ministry of Labor and Skills Engages with Bavarian Partners

Under the leadership of H.E. Minister Muferiat Kamil, an Ethiopian delegation visited Bavaria to explore collaborations. The delegation engaged with key Bavarian officials, including H.E. Minister Florian Herrmann, focusing on partnerships in business, vocational training, education, science, agriculture, and more. A significant development was the signing of an MOU between the Ethiopian Ministry of Labour and Skills Development and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) School of Social Sciences and Technology to enhance capacity-building in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Ethiopia, emphasizing digitalization and blended-learning practices. This collaborative effort aims to provide international expertise to the Ethiopian TVET sector.

HM KNUST Low Vision Project


The Munich University of Applied Sciences (HM) and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST) partner in a transformative project that addresses the visual health challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. Focused on training students and eye care professionals, the initiative establishes low vision centres in the Ashanti region, aligned with WHO standards. This holistic approach, linking local health centres and pioneering an online learning platform, promises a sustainable impact on eye care services in Ghana.
