Welcome to our second Bavaria-Africa Bulletin in 2026.
At the Scientific Coordination Office Bavaria-Africa (WKS Bavaria-Africa), which is part of the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR),
our mission is to foster and deepen collaboration between stakeholders
in Bavaria and Africa within research and innovation. We are dedicated
to offering comprehensive support in identifying suitable funding
opportunities and preparing project proposals for European and
(inter)national funding programmes that encourage the involvement of
Bavarian, European, and African stakeholders in the research and
innovation ecosystem.
In this edition of the
Bavaria-Africa Bulletin, we highlight a curated selection of open calls,
upcoming events and recent activities of the Bavarian Office for
Africa. As a special feature, this edition highlights the newly launched
Horizon Europe project “BEACON-HD”.

Bavaria-Western Cape Mobility Grant for Biotechnology, 2026 The
Bavaria–Western Cape Mobility Grant for Biotechnology helps to
kick-start collaborations between the partner organisations of the
Biotech Initiative Bavaria-Western Cape. The grant provides funding for
staff of these 18 organisations to travel to the partner region for
creating new networks, strengthening existing partnerships, and
exploring opportunities for joint research and innovation projects. The
ultimate goal is to develop long-term collaborations and competitive
joint grant proposals with stakeholders from universities, universities
of applied sciences, start-ups, and SMEs to strengthen the ecosystems in

Integrating climate-related exposures into the human exposome and characterising its changes in response to climate change

Human exposomes
offer a holistic view of the
environmental, biological, and social factors influencing
health. This Horizon Europe call seeks projects that incorporate
climate-related exposures into exposome research to better understand
their impact on disease and health outcomes. Expected results include
improved data, stronger evidence for policymakers and healthcare
professionals, and support for healthier, climate-resilient

Biodiversa+ Joint Call 2026-2027
The
upcoming Biodiversa+ “Novel ecosystems: biodiversity, socio-ecological
consequences and future trajectory” call will fund transnational
research on novel ecosystems, exploring their functioning, future
development pathways, and equitable biodiversity benefits. Projects may
address terrestrial, freshwater, marine, or coastal systems worldwide.
Germany and Tunisia are part of the contributing countries.

Water4All 2026 – Joint Transnational Call
This
is a pre-announcement for upcoming
funding opportunities on transitional R&I
projects on “Sustainable
Water Management”, including integrated water resource

Germany, Tunisia and South Africa are amongst the eligible
countries.

GIZ Innovation Challenge
The
Innovation Challenge empowers pioneering ideas that have the potential
to transform women’s health in South Africa and beyond. Start-ups,

meaningful impact, accelerating commercialisation, and improving health

UN Science Summit 2026 This
year, alongside the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81), the
Science Summit takes place with the theme “From Boundaries to
Breakthroughs: Science for a Regenerative and Equitable Future”. It
focuses on how science, technology, and innovation can drive
regeneration, restoring ecosystems, rebuilding equity, and renewing
trust in the scientific enterprise. The Science Summit features hundreds
of sessions on global health, climate, AI, biodiversity, biotech, water
and sustainable development, fostering international collaboration to

WFF Flagship Event 2026 The
World Food Forum (WFF) flagship event is a global platform dedicated to
transforming agrifood systems through youth engagement, science and
innovation, and investment. The programme brings together policymakers,

networking opportunities, and collaborative forums, fostering

Ethiopia to Host COP32: Opportunities for Bavaria–Africa Partnerships Ethiopia
will host the United Nations Climate Change
Conference (COP32) in Addis Ababa in 2027, becoming the first
Least Developed Country to preside over a UN climate conference. With
the city already home to the African Union and the United Nations
Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the conference is set to draw
major international attention. The Bavarian Office for Africa
and BayFOR see it as a key opportunity for Bavarian companies,
universities, and research institutions to deepen climate and
clean-tech partnerships across Africa ahead of 2027. Read more |

BEYEPP Concludes with Graduation of Final Cohort in Addis Ababa The
Bavarian Ethiopian Youth Employment Promotion Project (BEYEPP) marked
the graduation of its final cohort and its official closing in Addis
Ababa in July 2026. Over two years, 469 young Ethiopians completed
vocational training in trades, from solar installation to garment
production. More than 80 per cent of the participants
are now employed or self-employed. The project was
a partnership between bbw International, Selam Children's
Village, and the Bavarian State Chancellery. Read more |

BEACON-HD: Building
Equitable Health Systems through Telemedicine and Community-Based
Models for Hypertension and Diabetes Care
How
can innovative, patient-centred care reduce the growing burden of
cardiovascular disease in Sub-Saharan Africa? BEACON-HD is tackling this
challenge in rural Rwanda and Uganda by improving hypertension and
diabetes care through two proven approaches: telemedicine with
self-monitoring and community-based medication delivery. By easing
pressure on healthcare workers, strengthening health information
systems, and bringing care closer to patients, the project aims to
create more equitable, sustainable health systems and improve
long-term health outcomes. More information |
