II.2 Individual Implants for Skull Surgery

This project concentrates on the development of methods to automatically design patient-specific implants using a computer and to produce those afterwards within a short time. The idea includes the production of titanium implants for covering skull defects as well as the development of supporting structures for bone graft substitutes. After implantation these substitutes will transform gradually into natural bone. For the first weeks following the implantation a supporting structure is necessary to guarantee mechanical stability as these substitute materials are not able to match mechanical strain, especially in the jaw region.
