International Symposium - 25-26. February 2021 - Brain organoids in research and therapy - New ethical and legal questions

09/12/2020

The function of the human brain is still a mystery. Until recently, only autopsy tissue was available for structural study of the brain. Consequently, the test results could only reflect the condition at the end of life. However, dynamic and functional studies of different human brain cells are needed to better understand brain development and function.

Here, brain organoids, artificially grown in vitro miniature brains, now offer the possibility for more flexible research scenarios. At the same time, the use of brain organoids in research and therapy raises new ethical and legal questions. Against this background, the international symposium aims to clarify the moral implications of using brain organoids in research and therapy. The ethical considerations are mirrored by appropriate legal analyzes in order to determine the need for adjustments to the applicable legal framework.
