Nervous system of the gut and Parkinson's Disease

Field of work:

Investigation of biological alterations and functional deficits in neural and glial cells

Gastrointestinal dysfunctions represent one of the earliest symptoms of Parkinson disease and coincide with the appearance of alpha-synuclein aggregates in cells of the gut nervous system. It has even been postulated that Parkinson disease arises in the gut nervous system from where it spreads systemically throughout the nervous system.  It is the aim of our project to identify and characterize potential functional disturbances in cells of the gut nervous system with relevance for Parkinson disease. For these studies we will use transgenic mouse models as well as gut neurons to be generated from induced pluripotent stem cells from Parkinson patients and control subjects.
