A1: Technical Ceramic as Tool Material in Cold Forming

Main objective of this project is the qualification of technical ceramic (Silicium Nitride Si3N4) as tool material in cold forming. By means of a selected process for the production of billets (for further manufacturing of screws), tool life and the efficiency of the production will be increased via the replacement of cemented carbide dies with ceramic inserts as well as a ceramic-adapted tool design. In the sense of a flexible tool design, the development, layout and optimization of pre-stressed tool system with ceramic inserts will be carried out with the help of FE-Simulations. A necessary requirement during this procedure will be the acquisition of material properties of the workpiece as well as the analysis of the friction behavior at the workpiece-die interface. To reach these aims, the whole process chain from tool design and tool manufacturing up to actual use during production will be considered.
