From Kenya to Bavaria for a Sustainable Future: Kenyan Delegation meets Bavaria’s leading Hydrogen Stakeholders
From Innovation to Inspiration: The Week’s Highlights
Day 1 – Arrival and Kick-off in Munich
Following an introductory session by BayFOR’s CEO, Martin Reichel, the delegation began its journey in Munich with an overview of Bavaria’s innovation ecosystem for green hydrogen at the Bavarian Research Alliance. Presentations by Bosch AG, the Technical University of Munich, the Fraunhofer Association, and Landshut University of Applied Sciences showcased current projects and research initiatives. In an interactive workshop, the first innovative ideas for joint projects between Bavaria and Kenya were developed. The day concluded with a guided city tour and a traditional dinner at the historic ‘Schneider Bräuhaus’.
Day 2 – Regensburg & Kelheim: Research Meets Industry
In Pfeffenhausen near Landshut, the delegates visited Hy2B Wasserstoff GmbH, a leading company in electrolysis projects, as well as the planned Hydrogen Technology Application Center (WTAZ). The program continued with visits to OTH Regensburg and the FENES Institute, which provided insights into renewable energy systems and the H2Atlas project. The day ended with a tour to Kelheim Fibres GmbH and the Port of Kelheim, where discussions focused on the role of logistics and infrastructure for hydrogen transport.
Day 3 – Ingolstadt, Schweitenkirchen & Scheyern: Innovation & Culture
The third day featured campus visits to the Technical University of Ingolstadt and to Ostermeier H2ydrogen Solutions GmbH. In addition to practical insights into industrial hydrogen applications, a cultural visit to the historic Scheyern Abbey offered space for reflection and exchange in a traditional Bavarian setting.
Day 4 – Augsburg: Off-Grid Expo & Conference
The delegation participated in the international Off-Grid Expo & Conference, where Kenya was featured as the partner country. The event highlighted decentralized energy supply, green hydrogen applications, and technologies for rural areas. The opening ceremony was conducted by the Kenyan Ambassador to Germany, H.E. Stella-Mokaya Orina OGW. Participants engaged with innovators and solution providers such as Phaesun GmbH and the SEED Center of the Technical University of Munich to discuss sustainable approaches to rural energy access and the green transition.
Day 5 – Munich: H2-Waste Truck & Wrap-Up
The trip concluded with a visit to the Munich Waste Management Company (AWM), where the transition to electric and hybrid-hydrogen-powered waste collection vehicles was presented—a practical example of decarbonizing municipal services. Afterwards, the delegation gathered at BayFOR for a final lunch and reflections on the week, discussing prospects for future cooperation between Kenya and Bavaria.
The aim of the delegation visit was to explore innovative practical examples in the field of green hydrogen and renewable energies, generate new momentum for the hydrogen economy in Kenya and Bavaria, and strengthen professional exchange between experts from academia, industry, and the energy sector.
The delegation trip proved to be a great success: it offered valuable insights into innovative hydrogen and energy solutions and laid the foundation for future joint projects between Kenya and Bavaria in this sector.
