The Martin Buber Society of Fellows in the Humanities and Social Sciences 2027-2028 (Application deadline: 3 September 2026)

The Martin Buber Society of Fellows is inviting exceptional young scholars (postdocs) from the humanities and social sciences to apply for a 4-year fellowship. The program is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

 

Up to 10 candidates – 5 from Germany and 5 from Israel – will be chosen and will get the chance to become part of a vibrant academic community in Jerusalem. 

Eligibility: 

▪️ PhD holders from an Israeli or German university or:

▪️ Israeli or German citizens who have completed their PhD elsewhere 

▪️ Candidates from any field in the humanities or the social sciences

▪️ PhD must have been received after 1 October 2022 and mustn't be obtained later than 1 July 2027 

▪️ The research doesn’t have to be connected to Jewish studies or Israel

Scope of the fellowship:

▪️ Stipend of 9,000 NIS/month

▪️ Additional housing subsidy if fellows move to Jerusalem

▪️ Non-Israeli fellows who move to Jerusalem with their family are eligible for additional support

▪️ Opportunity to pursue one’s individual research

▪️ Chance to participate in academic events organized by the Martin Buber Society

Duration: 

Scholarships are granted for a maximum of four years, beginning 1 October 2027 (subject to review at the end of each year).

Candidates must register here and submit a cover letter, a CV, a list of publications, a 1-page abstract of the PhD, a research proposal of 5 pages, and 2 recommendation letters.
