The German Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research & Development (GIF) invites scientists to submit proposals for organizing a GIF Young Scientists’ Meeting (GYSM). GYSMs offer a platform for early career scientists from Israel and Germany to meet, become acquainted with each other’s work, and receive the chance to discuss their ideas with established scientists in their field.

For each GYSM a Scientific Advisory Committee is set up consisting of established scientists from both countries.  The meeting may be held in either Israel or Germany.

Program outline:

  • The duration of a meeting should range from 2 to 3 days.
  • A maximum of 20 participants in equal numbers from Israel and Germany.
  • Each participating scientist must give a talk.
  • Participation throughout the full duration of a GYSM is mandatory.
  • The members of the scientific organizing committee of each meeting have to select the most appropriate candidates.

Eligibility:

  • All non-profit scientific institutions eligible to submit a GIF grant application can submit a GYSM proposal (go to this website for detailed information).
  • Applicants must have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DVM or equivalent). Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must have a confirmed position at a GIF eligible research institution for the full duration of the planned GYSM.
  • Each applicant can be a Principal Investigator (PI) in only one proposal at a time.
  • Each proposal must include at least one eligible institution from Germany and Israel.

Rules for conducting a GYSM:

  • GIF serves as a point of contact.
  • Participants of a GYSM: Young scholars in their first steps in academia; doctoral students in the last stages of obtaining their degree; post- doctoral students and researchers up to 5 years after receiving their doctoral degree.
  • Preference is given to participants who have no prior active funded research cooperation with scientists in the other country.
  • Each GYSM may have specific criteria outlined by the scientific organizing committee.
  • Management duties are shared by the partners, not GIF.
  • No funds may be used for the administration and management of the GYSM.

Funding:
Each GYSM is budgeted with up to 20.000 EUR, which can be used to cover the expenses of traveling, accommodation, food and beverages, and the social and cultural program.

Deadline:
There is no application deadline.
