Research network - Seamless and ergonomic integration of robotics into clinical workflow

Cluster I: Modular Robot Systems

The cluster focuses on modular, multi-arm robotic systems and the application of RAS in visceral surgery.  Modular systems allow the use of currently up to four robotic arms that can be individually installed around the patient and used for surgical interventions in diverse specialties. The modular character of the systems mentioned above theoretically allows numerous setups ranging from single-arm to hybrid to fully robotic interventions, i.e., the systems exhibit comparatively high flexibility. Currently, however, it must be stated that either only one arm is used, or 3 to 4 arms are used, usually with the assistance of a laparoscopic instrument ("4+1"). Thus, hybrid RAS systems' great potential is unused in many respects.
