SUSTAINABLE BIOTECHNOLOGY IN BAVARIA

For years Bavaria has focussed research efforts on the conservation of declining raw materials and on reducing the consumption of natural resources in order to establish a strong foundation for long-term economic growth. Protecting the environment is, first and foremost, an ecological necessity; it is also a matter of global justice and equality across generations. Because Bavaria is an active location for trade and industry, it is particularly important that innovative and environmentally friendly production processes are established.
Biotechnological processes offer huge potential for encouraging industry biologisation. Industrial (white) biotechnology (IBT) – a key dynamic technology – holds significant potential to substantially contribute towards resource conservation and environmental protection. The Research Association “Sustainable biotechnology in Bavaria – BayBiotech” (”Ressourcenschonende Biotechnologie in Bayern – BayBiotech”) is pressing ahead with resource conservation, with six application-orientated projects and a coordination project. It makes a significant contribution to the Bavarian sustainability strategy and creates ecological added value.
The first key subject targets resource conservation on a more general basis. Three specialist projects investigating issues affecting various industry sectors could, in the long-term, offer economical and ecological benefits for the traditional chemical manufacturing processes of diverse products.
Petroleum-based plastics have become omnipresent in all areas of day-to-day life. Food packaging, bags, toys: almost all everyday objects contain plastic components which cause major environmental problems because of their poor biodegradability and their longevity. Vast quantities of plastic waste harm not only the ecosystem, but also the health of humans and animals. As part of the key topic “biopolymers”, three specialist projects are researching new methods for the biotechnological manufacturing of biodegradable bioplastics.
