Sustainability in Energy Storage Systems: Webinar on LCA, Ecodesign and Second-Life Batteries

01/06/2026
[Translate to Englisch:] Webinar Sustainability in Energy Storage Systems

The Horizon Europe projects HAVEN, SMHYLES and HiHELIOS are jointly organising a public webinar on 1 June 2026 focusing on sustainable hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) and next-generation battery technologies.

As renewable energy deployment grows across Europe, sustainable energy storage solutions are becoming increasingly important for grid stability and decarbonisation. At the same time, the environmental impact of batteries and hybrid energy storage systems — from raw materials and manufacturing to reuse and recycling — remains a major challenge.

The webinar will explore topics such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), ecodesign, sustainable materials and second-life battery applications. Key questions include:

  • How do we account for second-life batteries?
  • How can systems with different chemistries be compared?
  • How can ecodesign principles translate sustainability ambitions into concrete engineering decisions?

These are exactly the questions that the three Horizon Europe projects are tackling. HAVEN develops intelligent, modular and scalable hybrid energy storage systems. SMHYLES, in which BayFOR is a project partner, focuses on sustainable and safe salt- and water-based storage technologies, while HiHELIOS demonstrates hybrid battery storage solutions with high energy and power density.

Programme

14:00–14:05 | Welcome & Introduction (Camilo Borgogno, AEIMIS)
14:05–14:20 | HAVEN – Sustainability and Ecodesign in Hybrid Energy Storage
14:20–14:35 | SMHYLES – LCA and Environmental Assessment of Aqueous and Salt-Based Storage
14:35–14:50 | HiHELIOS – Second-Life Batteries and Lifecycle Impact
14:50–15:30 | Panel Discussion & Q&A

The webinar is the ideal platform for industry professionals, policy makers, researchers and the general public who are interested in the future of energy storage technologies and want to exchange ideas with experts.
