New EU Innovation Platform aims to strengthen Europe’s start-up ecosystem

The European Commission has unveiled the new ‘EU Innovation Platform’ at the European Innovation Summit in Brussels. The platform is designed to help innovators, start-ups and scale-ups find suitable funding opportunities, events and networks more quickly, thereby facilitating the journey of innovative ideas to market.

Developed by the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), the EU Innovation Platform is part of the new “EU Start-up and Scale-up Strategy. The aim of the initiative is to better consolidate existing European innovation support services and digital tools and to strengthen the networking of the European innovation ecosystem.

As a one-stop shop, the platform is designed to simplify access to relevant support services. Through a personalised approach, users gain access to information, funding opportunities, events and other services that can support them in developing and marketing their innovations.

Personalised recommendations for innovators

At the heart of the platform is an intelligent recommendation system. This takes into account individual innovation needs, the relevant economic or technological sector, geographical location and the maturity of a project. On this basis, suitable services, the latest news, events or calls for funding are suggested.

The European Commission’s aim is to make access to existing support services within Europe more efficient and user-friendly.

Initially for EU-funded innovators

In its initial phase, the EU Innovation Platform is aimed at innovators who have already benefited from EU funding programmes and wish to successfully establish their innovations on the market. The platform is designed to help them tap into growth potential, create new jobs and contribute to Europe’s competitiveness.

The service is set to be expanded gradually over the coming months. In future, other players in the European innovation ecosystem are also to be granted access, including start-ups, scale-ups, management consultancies, investors, large enterprises and other stakeholders.

With the new platform, the European Commission is implementing a further building block of its innovation policy and strengthening the links between research, innovation and entrepreneurship in Europe.
