BayFOR at IFAT Africa 2025

BayFOR will be providing services on site in the German Pavilion.
BayFOR will provide advice in the German Pavilion at its joint stand with the Water Technology Transfer Network (TTW) of the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU), covering European funding programmes for research and innovation, as well as opportunities for African stakeholders to engage with the key themes of IFAT: water, wastewater and recycling management. BayFOR will also present its portfolio of services.
BayFOR workshop: 'German Water Technologies: Driving Innovation with European Funding for Research and Innovation' on 9 July 2025.
Aim of the workshop:
How can German water technologies be further developed in a targeted manner with European funding, especially at the intersection of water, energy, and food? The event will demonstrate how European funding programmes in the field of research and innovation can facilitate international cooperation.
Focus:
- EU funding opportunities for research and innovation in the water sector, including for African partners.
- Successful project examples with African participation
- Current challenges in water management and the potential contribution of German technologies.
- Responsibilities and funding structures in Germany and Europe
- Practical tips for applying for and implementing European funding projects
Highlights:
In compact pitch sessions, leading German companies will present their solutions, including measurement technology and wastewater treatment.
Best practice: Bavarian and European-funded research and innovation projects.
Three examples illustrate how Bavarian research is having an impact worldwide:
- Prof. Dr. Kevin Winter from the University of Cape Town presents the Water Hub South Africa, which involves converting a disused sewage treatment plant into a real-life laboratory for nature-based water treatment, resource utilisation, and applied research in a socially and ecologically sensitive environment.
- Dr Daphne Keilmann-Gondhalekar from the Technical University of Munich presents the EU project TRANS-SAHARA, which involves developing climate-resilient agroforestry systems that link water, energy, food and ecosystems to promote greater food security and the sustainable use of natural resources.
- Prof. Dr Gertrud Buchenrieder, from the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich, coordinates the EU project INCiTiS-FOOD, which is a European–African collaboration using circular technologies, such as hydroponics, aquaculture, and insect farming, to create innovative solutions for urban food systems in sub-Saharan Africa. BayFOR is a project partner.
