Sweden takes over the EU Council Presidency

EU Council Presidency Sweden

On 1 January 2023, Sweden took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from the Czech Republic. The Swedish government will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU until 30 June 2023.

The focus of this presidency will primarily be on the topics of security, competitiveness, green change and energy transition, as well as democratic values and the rule of law.

In the area of research and innovation, the current procedures to accelerate the transition to Open Science and to research infrastructures in the digital transformation are to be continued and completed.

In addition, the Presidency will coordinate the report of the European Court of Auditors on synergies between H2020 and the European Structural and Investment Funds, and push for the amendment of the Single Legal Act on Joint Undertakings to include the new Chips Act Joint Undertaking.

Targeted events are planned on research infrastructures, life sciences, science and society, and science and ethics. Special relevance will also be given to space research (Fair and sustainable use of Space).
