New EuroHPC call for proposals: Europe's offensive for supercomputing software

While Europe has some of the world's most powerful supercomputers, hardware alone is not enough. It needs software that can utilise these machines. It also needs developers who can write it. The new call for proposals builds precisely this bridge, promoting software development, training and networking, and thus strengthening Europe's digital sovereignty. Through the HORIZON-JU-EUROHPC-2026-COE-LH-01 call for proposals, the EU intends to solidify Europe's dominant position in high-performance computing (HPC).
Three themes, one goal: excellence in HPC applications
The call for proposals supports projects in three areas:
Community Centres of Excellence (CoEs)
These develop application-oriented software solutions for Europe's most powerful supercomputers. The goal is to create applications that advance climate research, medicine, energy, and industry. Particular focus is given to AI integration, user orientation and training.
Transversal CoEs
These hubs connect European developers and provide technical expertise, training and advice. They also create standards for interoperable software in science and industry.
Lighthouse Codes
It's all about excellence in code: creating application software with global appeal and a large user base. We support teams that translate Europe's strategic priorities in science and industry into powerful software.
Background: EuroHPC – Europe's supercomputing strategy
The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) was established in 2018. Its goal is to secure Europe's leading role in supercomputing through joint investment by the EU and its member states.
Achievements to date:
- Ten supercomputers across Europe, accessible to researchers, industry and government via EuroHPC Access Calls.
- 13 AI Factories – open AI ecosystems with tailored support for start-ups and SMEs.
- A European quantum computing infrastructure has been established, with six quantum computers already being implemented and more to follow.
- The entire European HPC value chain is being promoted, from hardware and software to the training of new HPC experts.
Call for proposals: deadlines and funding
- The deadline is 20 January 2026 at 17:00 CET.
- Funding volume: up to €60 million from the EU framework programme Horizon Europe.
