On October 29th, the COST Action FP0903 “Climate Change and Forest Mitigation and Adaptation in a Polluted Environment” presents the findings of four years' intensive research at a final conference in Brussels. The project has investigated how forest ecosystems deal with climate change and air pollution. At the conference, BayFOR gives insight into new funding possibilities arising from Horizon 2020, the new EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.

Nowadays forests increasingly suffer from climate change and air pollution while at the same time trying to adapt to these challenges. The project’s final conference reflects the outcome of the scientific discussion and synthesis from COST Action FP0903. The project pursues two main objectives: It intends to increase the understanding of state and potential of forest mitigation and adaptation to climate change in a polluted environment. Moreover, it aims at reconciling process-oriented research, long-term monitoring and applied modelling at comprehensive forest research sites (Supersites).

COST is an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology, allowing the coordination of nationally-funded research on a European level. It anticipates and complements the activities of the EU Framework Programmes, constituting a “bridge” towards the scientific communities of emerging countries.

At the final conference, the main results of the Action will be presented by renowned speakers and transferred to environmental and research policy-makers. Individual presentations will be followed by a round table discussion. BayFOR presents new funding possibilities arising from Horizon 2020, the new EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, as funding opportunities by COST come to an end, and gives insight into its service portfolio. Moreover, BayFOR is glad to take part in the organisation of the conference.
