On November 21st, the members of the European FP7-environmental project CLIMB will present their findings of four years’ intensive research at a final conference in Brussels. They will reveal a strategy to reduce uncertainty and to quantify risks of climate change in Southern Europe, North Africa as well as the Near and Middle East. Representatives of the European Commission, the three cluster projects as well as scientific, industrial and public stakeholders from CLIMB’s case study sites will discuss the outcomes of CLIMB and the research cluster CLIWASEC.

Climate change is a global and ever-growing problem that bears increasing potential for tensions and conflicts among the political and economic actors in the respective regions. Therefore, existing water resources must be used and managed in a sustainable way in order to prevent severe droughts, floods, the salinisation of coastal groundwater and increasing land degradation of fertile soils.

The CLIMB project (Climate Induced Changes on the Hydrology of Mediterranean Basins) has made an important step towards a better understanding and treatment of this issue. Over a period of four years, the consortium has investigated the impacts of climate induced change on the hydrology and the management of water resources in the Mediterranean region. CLIMB and the two other thematically related projects WASSERMed (Water Availability and Security in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean) and CLICO (Climate Change, Hydro-Conflicts and Human Security) are forming the research cluster CLIWASEC (Climate Change Impacts on Water and Security in the Mediterranean).

At the project’s final conference, guests will have the possibility to find out about the project outcome and discuss with the consortium about its research efforts. The all-day conference will take place at the Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to the European Union and will be followed by a convivial get together. BayFOR – a member of the CLIMB consortium and responsible for project management and dissemination as well as for the interaction of the three CLIWASEC projects – is glad to co-organise the final conference.
