The Scientific Coordination Office Bavaria-Africa at the conference of the Association for African Studies in Germany (VAD) in Bayreuth
This year, the Institute of African Studies at the University of Bayreuth is hosting the biennial conference of the Association for African Studies in Germany. The conference will analyse global processes, such as the climate crisis, war and pandemics, as well as challenges for democracies, with and through African perspectives. African and European researchers, activists, politicians and artists will come together at this conference to address knowledge production in a reflexive, relational and multiple way.
The conference offers a space for critical, multi-disciplinary discussions to stimulate cooperation and intellectual exchange. In particular, Africa-related institutions outside the continent will be brought into a dialogue with museums, universities and associations in Africa. Hereby, the role of African Studies will be reflected upon. The workshops are divided into seven sections:
- Location-based African Studies: Discrepancies and Debates
- Perspectives on current crises
- Imagining ‘Africanness’
- Political Economy of Extractivism
- Social media, archiving and ‘the digital’
- New forms of collaboration in African arts
- Ecology and planetary consciousness
On the first day of the conference, Monday, September 30, 2024, the WKS Bavaria-Africa informs about research funding opportunities in the African-European context during a lunch talk session. Various services offered by WKS Bavaria-Africa will be presented, ranging from individual advice on suitable funding programmes to the proofreading of funding applications and information on current calls for proposals. A particular focus is on AU-EU funding programmes.
