Cyprus to take over EU Council Presidency in 2026

The Republic of Cyprus will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first half of 2026, beginning on 1 January. Under the motto 'An autonomous Europe, open to the world', Cyprus has set out its key political priorities at a time of significant geopolitical and economic challenges for the EU.

These include strengthening the EU's strategic autonomy, security and resilience policy, supporting Ukraine, promoting EU enlargement, and demonstrating a clear commitment to multilateralism and international law. The Presidency will also focus on stability, dialogue and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Thanks to its geostrategic location, Cyprus sees itself as a bridge builder between Europe, the Middle East and Africa. During its presidency, Cyprus aims to strengthen cohesion between EU member states, European institutions, and international partners, as well as contribute to the capacity of the European Union to act as an open, secure, and effective entity.
