H2G2 – German-Greek Platform for cooperation and support measures in the field of green hydrogen
H2G2 (Hydrogen Support Hub for Technology Transfer in German-Greek Collaborations) is a German-Greek project that strengthens knowledge and technology transfer in the field of green hydrogen. The project supports several German-Greek research and innovation projects in bringing their results to industrial application more quickly, fostering collaboration between the scientific and business communities of both countries, and establishing new international partnerships for the European hydrogen economy. BayFOR coordinates the project and is responsible for its cross-project networking and technology transfer activities.
German-Greek Cooperation for the Hydrogen Economy
Green hydrogen is regarded as a key technology for achieving a climate-neutral energy supply in Europe. Accelerating market-ready innovations across the entire hydrogen value chain requires efficient knowledge and technology transfer between research and industry.
Germany and Greece complement each other perfectly in the hydrogen sector. While Germany contributes its industrial expertise, Greece offers excellent conditions for renewable energy generation. Together, the two countries are making an important contribution to the development of a European hydrogen economy.
Knowledge and Technology Transfer for Hydrogen Innovation
H2G2 supports German-Greek research and innovation projects across the entire hydrogen value chain, covering hydrogen production, storage, transport, safety and application.
Many participating projects face similar challenges, including the exploitation of research results, the protection of intellectual property, collaboration with industrial partners and securing additional European funding. H2G2 helps project partners address these challenges by promoting the exchange of knowledge and experience, supporting technology transfer and strengthening international networking across the European hydrogen ecosystem.
Networking: A Key Driver of Successful Innovation
To promote knowledge and technology transfer, H2G2 organises coaching workshops, clustering activities and matchmaking events with industry partners. These activities are complemented by events on intellectual property (IP) and European research and innovation funding programmes, including Horizon Europe and the Clean Hydrogen Partnership.
Joint participation in European conferences and industry events further strengthens collaboration between academia, industry and innovation stakeholders.
The first in-person meeting of the H2G2 consortium partners took place at HYDROGEN DIALOGUE 2026 on 24 June 2026 in Munich. In cooperation with the German-Hellenic Chamber of Industry and Commerce and with the support of the Trade Office of the Greek Consulate General in Munich, BayFOR organised a delegation visit of Greek hydrogen stakeholders. This provided the project partners with an opportunity to establish personal contacts, strengthen their collaboration and expand exchanges with international stakeholders in the hydrogen economy.
Project objectives
H2G2's aim is to strengthen knowledge and technology transfer between Germany and Greece in the field of green hydrogen. The project focuses on the following objectives:
- Supporting the transfer of research results into industrial applications
- Supporting IP protection and exploitation strategies
- Establishing long-term research and innovation partnerships
- Strengthening international networking among German and Greek stakeholders across the hydrogen value chain
- Increasing the visibility of project results at the European level
Target groups
H2G2 primarily supports the German-Greek project consortia funded under the 3rd German-Greek Research and Innovation Programme by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and the Greek General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GSRI).
The project's results, together with its networking and knowledge transfer activities, are also relevant to other stakeholders across the hydrogen value chain, particularly:
- Research institutions and universities
- Companies and SMEs active in the hydrogen economy
- Technology developers and technology users
- Early-career researchers and innovation stakeholders
- European and regional hydrogen networks
- Stakeholders from academia, industry and policymaking across the hydrogen value chain
BayFOR as a partner
The Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR) coordinates the project consortium and contributes its long-standing expertise in European research funding, international networking, clustering, dissemination and technology transfer.
Within H2G2, BayFOR is responsible for:
- Project management and bilateral coordination
- Facilitating knowledge and experience exchange between project partners
- Organising workshops on European funding programmes and supporting future Horizon Europe-related activities
- Networking with European hydrogen initiatives and relevant stakeholders
- Communication and dissemination activities
Funding period
H2G2 (Hydrogen Support Hub for Technology Transfer in German-Greek Collaborations) is the accompanying scientific project of the 3rd German-Greek Research and Innovation Programme "Intensifying Cooperation with Greece in the Field of Green Hydrogen". The programme is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) in cooperation with the Greek General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GSRI). The project runs from May 2026 to April 2029.
