European Commission expands RAISE: Companies support AI research across Europe

The European Commission has launched a new initiative to support artificial intelligence (AI) research across Europe at the European AI in Science Summit 2026 in Dublin. As part of RAISE (Resource for AI Science in Europe), companies and philanthropic organisations are invited to provide additional resources for researchers, including advanced AI models, computing capacity, research data and software. The “RAISE AI in Science Enablers Pledging Initiative” aims to strengthen collaboration between science and industry and accelerate the use of AI in European research.

Artificial intelligence is opening up new opportunities in science – from developing new medicines and analysing large research datasets to simulating complex physical processes. However, researchers need powerful computing infrastructure, specialised software and access to advanced AI models to make use of these technologies. Such resources are often expensive and not equally accessible to all research institutions.

The new RAISE initiative aims to improve access to these resources by mobilising additional support from industry and philanthropic organisations, complementing public research funding provided by the European Union.

Companies and foundations support AI research

The initiative focuses on voluntary commitments from companies and foundations willing to contribute resources and expertise to European research. These contributions may include computing capacity, AI models, cloud services, software licences, research data, training and professional development opportunities. Financial support, scholarships, fellowships and research collaborations are also possible.

The first organisations to make commitments include NVIDIA, Google DeepMind, Mistral AI, Elsevier, Sanofi, Frontiers and the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

One example of the collaboration envisaged under the initiative is a new partnership between Mistral AI and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Together, they aim to develop a large-scale AI foundation model for physics research.

The initiative remains open to further companies and philanthropic organisations. Participation requires a concrete commitment to supporting AI in science beyond immediate commercial interests. The resources available to researchers and the conditions for accessing them will depend on the individual contributions.

New RAISE platforms connect researchers and industry

Alongside the initiative, three interconnected online platforms have been launched to bring together information, resources and collaboration opportunities related to AI in science:

  • RAISE Hub: A central point of access to information and resources for AI-driven research.
  • RAISE Forum: A platform for knowledge exchange and networking among researchers and other stakeholders.
  • RAISE Observatory: An information platform providing insights into developments and the use of AI in European science.

Together, these platforms aim to strengthen Europe's research community and facilitate collaboration between academia and industry.

RAISE as part of the European AI strategy

RAISE is part of the European Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Science, published in October 2025. Conceived as a virtual European institute, RAISE aims to bring together research expertise, computing capacity, data and funding to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence in science. A total of €107 million from the EU's Horizon Europe programme has been earmarked for its pilot phase.

At the European AI in Science Summit, the European Commission also presented the updated ERA Living Guidelines on the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research. These guidelines provide researchers and research organisations with recommendations for the transparent and responsible use of generative AI, including autonomous AI agents.
