Due to the spread of the corona virus, the organisers have decided to cancel  the Croissant event on 24/25 March 2020 in Brussels.

Brussels. On 24 march 2020 the network of UAS4EUROPE invites various Brussels-based stakeholder organizations such as the offices within the IGLO network, RTOs, university organizations, business representatives and permanent representations. The main purpose of the event is to promote the active involvement of the European UAS in the specific clusters of the working program for “Horizon Europe” (HEU). BayFOR provides comprehensive support and advice to the Hochschule Bayern e. V. in its tasks within the UAS4Europe network and accompanies this process with its liaison office in Brussels.

UAS don’t want to promote themselves, but let others talk about their specific value for Europe and its society (UAS as the link between research, industry, public authorities and end-users). There is very much expertise within the European UAS sector regarding the working program and its future clusters that could be beneficial for the future of European research as such. This timing for this event has been chosen since in March the Strategic Planning for Horizon Europe will be adopted (2021-2024) and the preparation of the work programs will have started.

Speakers
Raimund Ribtisch will represent UAS4EUROPE as the current chair. He will outline the position of UAS4EUROPE on HEU, respectively the specific focus on applied and innovation-oriented research. He will highlight the impact of UAS. In the working programs of HEU UAS encourage a transdisciplinary approach with the relevant players (research institutions, industry, public authorities and end-users) working together more closely to tackle future challenges.

Wolfgang Burtscher from the European Commission, Directorate General for Research and Innovation, will act as a keynote speaker. The task of DG RTD is to implement Horizon Europe by the 3rd quarter of 2020. He will respond to our views of the role of UAS in HEU and referencing the priorities of HEU and the status quo of its implementation.

Panel 1 - Horizon Europe: Views of the Presidency of the Council of Europe
Željka Skočilić (Ministry of Science and Education, Croatia) and Michael Vorländer (Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the EU) as representatives of the current and following presidency of the Council of the EU will go into their plans and ideas regarding Horizon Europe and how UAS can and should contribute to reaching their objectives.
Barbara Weitgruber (Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, Austria) will give an input on the specific role of UAS in Austria, especially the added value regarding the technology and innovation transfer accomplished by UAS.

Panel 2 - The added value of UAS as perceived by stakeholders
Claudia Gamon (Renew Europe, ITRE committee, Austria) will give her opinion on the programming and the impact-oriented approach and how she sees the role of UAS.
Julia Schmalenberg (Senior Policy Adviser, Technology Transfer and Digitizing Industry, Fraunhofer EU Office Brussels) will highlight the added value of UAS and the experience of the Fraunhofer Institutes with UAS.
Representative of SME will go into the enterprises’ experience with UAS and the added value of co-operations.

The event will be moderated by Karin Lukas-Eder (BayFOR). Within the panels, there will be room for questions from the audience at the end of each panel.

As an outcome of the event, the participants should understand and recognize the importance of UAS in general and their messages for Horizon Europe. In addition, there will be an event report/press release.
