New European Partnership for Personalised Medicine (EP PerMed) established

The newly launched European Partnership for Personalised Medicine (EP PerMed) aims to improve future healthcare for all citizens through personalised therapy, diagnosis and prevention. With a total budget of around €375 million, provided by the EU and more than 50 international partners, EP PerMed will not only significantly support the transnational development of personalised medicine approaches over the next ten years, but also their successful translation into clinical practice. A preliminary announcement for the first joint transnational call for proposals has now been published.

The role of universities of applied sciences (UAS) in the reform of research assessment CoARA

The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) is a European initiative (2022) to reform research assessment. The aim is to promote a holistic approach to the assessment of scientific performance, based primarily on qualitative rather than quantitative indicators. The success of this reform initiative depends on the broad participation of different institutions. The participation of universities of applied sciences, with their practice-oriented, transdisciplinary research, is particularly important.

Association with "Horizon Europe": News on the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Canada

From 1 January 2024, the United Kingdom will participate in the EU research and innovation programme "Horizon Europe" and the EU Earth observation programme "Copernicus" under the same conditions as its partners in the EU Member States. The EU and Canada are currently finalising their negotiations on association with Horizon Europe. The association agreement is expected to be signed in 2024. The EU has also declared its willingness to enter into talks on Switzerland's association with Horizon Europe.

National Action Plan for the European Research Area adopted

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has adopted an Action Plan for the European Research Area (ERA), which outlines national guidelines and areas of focus. The main goals are to establish ERA as a competitive and genuine "single market for knowledge" and to strengthen Germany as a center of science and research.

MEPs approve Iliana Ivanova as new Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth

The European Parliament today approved the appointment of Iliana Ivanova (Bulgaria) as Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. Ms Ivanova will succeed Mariya Gabriel to implement the EU's research and development programme. She will also be responsible for the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) and the Directorate-General for Education and Culture (DG EAC).

EU-UK: Political agreement on participation in Horizon Europe and Copernicus

The European Commission and the United Kingdom have reached a political agreement that will deepen relations in research, innovation and space. At stake is the UK's participation in Horizon Europe, the EU's research and innovation programme, and Copernicus, the EU's world-leading Earth observation programme. The political agreement must now be endorsed by the Council before it is formally adopted in the EU-UK Technical Committee for participation in Union programmes.
