Public consultation launched on the further development of the European Research Area

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the further development and completion of the European Research Area (ERA). The consultation period runs from 13 October 2025 to 5 January 2026. With this initiative, the Commission wishes to gather insights and opinions from stakeholders on the current challenges and potential solutions in the European Research Area. This feedback will contribute to the development of practical and effective EU measures that strengthen research, innovation and the European single market.

Who can participate?

The consultation is aimed at a wide range of stakeholders, including:

  • national and regional administrations,
  • universities and research institutions,
  • companies and SMEs,
  • technology centres and research infrastructures,
  • vocational training and education institutions,
  • scientific societies, advisory organisations and publishers,
  • as well as the general public.

How to participate

Interested parties can submit their comments via the online questionnaire on the European Commission's website.

The questionnaire will initially be available in English, with translations into all 24 official EU languages to follow shortly. Once these translations have been published, the consultation will remain open for twelve weeks.

Contributions can be submitted in any official EU language.

For reasons of transparency, organisations and companies are requested to register with the EU Transparency Register.
