The European Commission has unveiled two new strategies to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in European industry and science. Through the 'Apply AI' and 'AI in Science Strategy' initiatives, the EU intends to establish Europe as a leader in the development of trustworthy AI and encourage its use in business, research, and the public sector.

The Scientific Coordination Office Bavaria-Africa has published a guide to foster research collaboration between Africa and Europe. Based on the outcomes of the Cooperation Lounge Africa–Europe: Science meets Politics (10–11 December 2024 in Brussels), the guide provides recommendations for researchers, policymakers and funding bodies to improve cooperation frameworks and to advance research and innovation of global relevance.

The European Commission has published its first monitoring report on the integration of the social sciences and humanities (SSH) into Horizon Europe. The report aims to increase the societal impact of European research and innovation projects, as well as promoting interdisciplinary solutions to current challenges by systematically integrating SSH expertise.

Munich, Germany – Sixfold increase in productivity, production costs halved, energy consumption and material wastage significantly reduced, component quality improved – the EU-funded research project InShaPe has published impressive numbers. Over the past three years, the consortium has developed a new process optimisation approach that combines AI-based beam shaping with multispectral imaging (MSI) in the laser-based powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M) additive manufacturing process. The aim of the project was to significantly improve the efficiency, economic feasibility and sustainability of this manufacturing process. The project partners have successfully trialled these innovations in five complex industrial demonstrators in the aerospace industry, the energy sector and mechanical engineering. The Professorship of Laser-based Additive Manufacturing at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) coordinated the project, working with ten other partners from eight countries. Funded by the European Union, InShaPe received 7.2 million euros from the Horizon Europe framework programme.

On 17 July 2025, the Commission published its proposal for the MFF for the period 2028–2034. With a budget of around 1.9 trillion euros, the new MFF is intended to secure Europe's long-term capacity to act and actively shape strategic change in areas such as competitiveness, security, climate protection, digitalisation, and research.

The European Research Council (ERC) has published its work programme for 2026. This contains comprehensive information on planned funding opportunities, call periods, budget amounts, and new application and review procedures. The ERC Scientific Council prepared the document, which was then officially adopted by the European Commission.

Earls-carer reasearchers from Bavaria and African countries can use the new tandem grant to establish and deepen international cooperation. The grant funds reciprocal research stays of between 14 and 31 days, during which time participants can develop joint projects and build networks.
