The European Commission and the United Kingdom have reached a political agreement that will deepen relations in research, innovation and space. At stake is the UK's participation in Horizon Europe, the EU's research and innovation programme, and Copernicus, the EU's world-leading Earth observation programme. The political agreement must now be endorsed by the Council before it is formally adopted in the EU-UK Technical Committee for participation in Union programmes.

On 28 June, the Board of Trustees of the Bavarian Research Foundation decided to support the Bavarian research association "ForNeRo - Seamless and Ergonomic Integration of Robotics into the Clinical Workflow" with approximately 2 million euros.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has proposed Iliana Ivanova as the new Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. She would be in charge of implementing the EU's research and development programme and would succeed Mariya Gabriel, who is returning to Bulgarian politics.

In the course of the coming months, the European Commission will organise several info days on the upcoming 2024 calls in the current work programme of Horizon Europe. Related brokerage events will be organised in cooperation with the network of National Contact Points.

The Commission has proposed an annual EU budget of €189.3 billion for 2024. The budget will be complemented by an estimated €113 billion in payments for grants under NextGenerationEU, the EU's post-pandemic recovery instrument. Their combined firepower will keep driving Europe's ongoing economic recovery and create jobs, while strengthening Europe's strategic autonomy.

The Advanced Materials 2030 Initiative (AMI2030) aims to set up a pan-European multi-sectoral accelerator for the design, development and uptake of sustainable advanced materials towards a circular economy.

The European Commission has submitted its Annual Report on Research and Technological Development Activities of the European Union and Monitoring of Horizon Europe and Horizon 2020 in 2022 to the European Parliament and the Council.
